Europa League final: Man Utd's Ander Herrera excited by chance to 'make history'

Focus on the final

Victory in Stockholm would take United back into the Champions League, but Herrera said the players will simply focus on bringing a European trophy back to Old Trafford.
"We will have a chance to think about the other things we have achieved if we win it," he said.
"I am prudent because Ajax want to win it as well, and Ajax are a good team. They have a talented team. They play with no fear.
"It is one game, one trophy. That is what will be in our minds. We are going to play for one European trophy that this club has never won."
Herrera believes United are in the "right moment" to win Wednesday's final.
But he added: "Ajax are also a massive club. Massive clubs in finals are never easy to beat."

Manchester United must focus on making history when they face Ajax in the Europa League final on Wednesday, says midfielder Ander Herrera.
The Spaniard, 27, is "really excited" by the chance to help United win the competition for the first time.
And he says United's second cup success of 2016-17 would make this a "great season" for the Red Devils, despite them finishing sixth in the league.
"I think we have the quality to get the trophy for the club," said Herrera.
"We have to play very well if we want to win it.
"We can be back in European titles - that's what United are about."

Player of the year? 'This is a team sport'

Herrera, who joined United in 2014 from Athletic Bilbao, was last week named the club's fans' player of the year.
But he stressed the club's achievements came before his.
"I don't want to think about what I have done," he said. "This is a team sport. This is Manchester United and we need hard work from everyone to get the trophy.
"If we don't win the final, people won't remember what I have done, or they will but not as much. I want to win it to make a great season.
"This game doesn't decide whether the season has been a success or a failure, that is too extreme. It can be a great season but I wouldn't say it would be a failure.
"I prefer to think that we have in our hands the chance to make history for the club and to make a great season."
Herrera will look to team-mates such as Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney - both Champions League winners in 2007-08 - for inspiration.
"They have been European champions. They can push us to be prepared for the final. Not every player in the dressing room has played in a European final. Less have won a European final."

Ibrahimovic 'here to help'

Herrera said injured striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic had been helping the team team prepare for the final.
Ibrahimovic had surgery earlier this month after suffering cruciate knee-ligament damage in the Europa League win over Anderlecht on 20 April.
Herrera said: "Zlatan is here to help. We are a team who is together. Everyone is important. He is supporting us.
"The final is in Sweden, close to his house. But he will be there supporting and helping."

The newly-elected boards of National Sports Federations will now be inaugurated on July 10 in Abuja, an official of the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports said on Wednesday. Nneka Ikem-Anibeze, the Special Assistant on Media to Solomon Dalung, the Minister of Youths and Sports, said in a statement that the inauguration was scheduled for the Abuja National Stadium. NNL Clubs Shun Pinnick-Led Committee Order To Play Super 8 Playoff

Five Nigeria National League, NNL clubs have shunned the Nigeria Football Federation order to play the NNL Super 8 playoff scheduled to commence today (Wednesday). Nigeria Football Federation had on Monday through a press release order all the eight qualified NNL teams to arrive Aba on Tuesday ahead of the NNL Super 8 playoff expected to kick off on Wednesday, 19th December 2019. As at the time of filing this report, three NNL clubs, Real Stars, Gombe, and Delta Force are in Aba the venue for the playoff while 3sc, Remo Stars, Kada, Bendel Insurance, and Kogi United have refused to honour the Super 8 playoff. NNL had proposed that two teams from each four abridge leagues (8 teams) should be promoted to participate in the 2018/19 Nigerian Professional Football League, NPFL season. NFF, on the other hand, has insisted that the Super 8 playoff should hold to produce four teams that will join the existing 20 NPFL clubs for 2018/19 season.

Gael Monfils overwhelmed home town hope, Cameron Norrie 6/3; 6/2, while Novak Djokovic defeated America’s Donald Young 6/2; 7/6 (9) to reach the semifinals at Eastbourne. Gusau Gets IAAF Recognition As AFN President

 Athletics Federation of Nigeria president-elect, Honourable Ibrahim Gusau, has been officially recognised as the de facto head of track and field in Nigeria by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) following his election on June 13 in Abuja. In its latest Newsletter, the IAAF listed Gusau among the 11 new heads of national federations elected or re-elected as the case may be in the past one month. The information regarding Gusau's election was supplied for publication in the Newsletter by the IAAF governance, member and international relations department and represents member federation election results received since the last newsletter was published. Leicester entice Iheanacho with £25m bid

Kelechi Iheanacho Leicester City manager Craig Shakespeare is leaving no stone unturned in his bid to land Manchester City Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho. Already a bid of £25m has been lodged for the forward, who has been told he can leave the club but only if a replacement is signed as the club need three strikers for next season. However, City are keen on inserting a buy back clause in any deal for the 20 year old, who was close to joining West Ham few weeks ago before talks stalled over the fee for the buy-back.
